The Town of Flatlands

Once known as Nieuw Amersfoort, Flatlands was established in 1636. Many early historians noted the exceptionally rural quality of Flatlands, more so than in the other towns. Even after the incorporation of Kings County into the City of New York, the area that was Flatlands remained rural. Without public transportation and access to city water supplies the southern most areas of Flatlands remained in relative isolation until the 1920s.

In 1925 a newspaper article was written about the Lott House and the loss of the farmland in the face of the ever growing suburbia. Today the Lott House is locatedin the Marine Park section of Brooklyn. Marine Park is the largest park in Brooklyn containing a golf course and the Salt Marsh Nature Center.
